Two documented readings exist side by side: the official one ties 21 to Newroz, the Kurdish new year on 21 March; the designer tied 21 to rebirth in native Kurdish religious traditions. A third, that the rays stand for 21 alphabet letters, is unsupported.

The sun, Roj, stands for the source of life and the light of the people. Sun veneration is documented in Kurdish religious tradition, most clearly in Yezidism.

The flag of Kurdistan. The reliable identification is the sun: exactly 21 pointed rays, one pointing straight up.

Within the Kurdistan Region, yes: the flag law passed on 11 November 1999, and 17 December is the official Flag Day. Elsewhere its status differs, and in parts of Kurdistan displaying it has required real courage.

Red is read as the blood of the martyrs, white as peace and equality, green as the land, gold as the source of life. The formal specification defines no symbolism; these are documented interpretations.

One ray points straight up, on the vertical line through the centre. Because 21 is odd, a rotated sun is the most common reproduction error.
