What the flag of Kurdistan means

The sun, Roj
The golden sun is called Roj, the Kurdish word for sun and day. On the flag it is read above all through Newroz: the official reading of the 21 rays ties them to the Kurdish new year that begins on 21 March. The designer of the standardized flag chose 21 for the same idea of rebirth, so both readings point one way: light returning and a people beginning again.

Recognizing the flag
If you searched for a red, white and green flag with a sun, or a flag with a yellow sun in the middle: that is the flag of Kurdistan. Its sun has exactly 21 pointed rays and one ray points straight up. Similar-looking flags exist, which is why the sun and its ray count are the reliable way to identify it.
